Ivan Čolović (Beograd, 1938) is a political anthropologist and writer. His best known books are Wild literature (Divlja književnost, 1985), The warriors’ bordello (Bordel ratnika, 1993), The politics of symbol in Serbia (Politika simbola, 1997), The Balkans: The terror of culture (Balkan – terorculture, 2008), Breaking with identity (Rastanak s identitetom, 2014), Death on Kosovo plain (Smrt na Kosovu polju, 2016) and The spitting and the image (Slike i prilike, 2018). Some of these books have been translated into English, French, Greek, Italian, Macedonian, German, Polish, and Slovak. Čolović is the founder and editor since 1971, and since 1989 the publisher, of the series Biblioteka XX Vek. He has received several awards, including the Herder prize (2000), Chevalier de Légion d’honneur (2001), the „Konstantin Obradović“ prize (2006), an honorary doctorate of the University of Warsaw, (2010), the „Vitez poziva“ award (2010), and the „Konstantin Jireček“ medal (2012). He received the “Mirko Kovač” award for his book Death on Kosovo plain (2017), and for the book The spitting and the image received the award of DK Studentski grad for the best work of non-fiction (2019).

This book is published in collaboration with the Peščanik web portal. It is comprised of thirteen essays published in 2019 and 2020. In them the author continues the research – begun in the book The warriors’ bordello – on the relationships between politics and culture in post-Communist Serbia and other states of the Western Balkans.
